Rankin County has seven incorporated cities and numerous communities spread out over 774 square miles, with a population of over 142,000. Brandon, which serves as the county seat, Flowood, Richland, and Florence were among the fastest growing communities in Mississippi between 2000 and 2008. The phenomenal growth of Rankin County can be attributed in part to its location, but another reason is that the leaders of Rankin County work toward a common goal. Planning, teamwork, and cooperation have enabled the county to move ahead in every area of government.

Brandon was incorporated in 1831 and was named for Gerard C. Brandon who was the first native Mississippian to serve as governor. The estimated 2009 population of Brandon is 21,112 and its residents have the highest average household income in the state. The National Weather Service has named Brandon one of only two cities in the United States as a Storm Ready City.
Pearl lies on the Pear River between Brandon and Jackson. Pearl was a rural farming community from the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s until urban development in Jackson spurred its growth. It was incorporated in 1973 and covers 17.1 square miles and has a 2009 estimated population of 23,145 residents, which makes it the county’s largest city
Florence lies in southwest Rankin County and has an estimated 2009 population of 2,924 residents. Originally a crossroads community in the 1800’s known as Steen’s Creek, it was incorporated in 1905. The old town section of Florence, which has antique shops and historic homes, was still called Steen’s Creek until a few years ago.
Flowood, for years a quiet little town in the woods across the river from Jackson, is now one of the fastest growing areas in Rankin County. It was incorporated in 1953 and was given city status in 1991. Many of Rankin County’s newest homes and businesses are located in Flowood. The 2009 estimated population is 6,487, but during the day, it swells to over 30,000 people.
Pelahatchie, which lies east of Brandon and has a estimate 2009 population of 1,547. Pelahatchie derives its name from the Choctaw word that means “crooked creek.” It was not incorporated until 1904, although residents had a post office and a school by 1870. Thanks to strong revitalization efforts, Pelahatchie is once again a growing city. Puckett is in the southeast corner of Rankin County. It is a self-sustaining community that has a 2009 estimated population of 404 residents and has lots of small town charm. It is home to Hydro Aluminum Puckett which manufactures automotive parts.
Richland, which has roots dating back 150 years and 7 generations, began as a commercial port on the Pearl River. It was incorporated in 1975 and now has a 2009 estimated population of 7,222 residents. Residential areas have seen dramatic growth in recent years. Civic organizations in this vibrant city include the Historical Society and the Primrose Path Theatre Company.
